PCI Express bus

Modern network applications for high-speed network technologies leverage hardware acceleration together with processing power of CPU cores of the host system to achieve sufficient performance. To be able to transfer the data between hardware and software, it is necessary to use an effective host interface. The last decade has been dominated by PCI Express, resulting in PCI Express bus being available on all modern server platforms. This makes PCI Express-based hardware suitable for use with commodity server, rendering the whole solution much cheaper when compared to the dedicated hardware and much more flexible because it enables to use standardized software tools.

The throughput of PCI Express bus in configuration Gen 3 x16, which is used on all of the current Netcope network interface cards, is on the level of 100G Ethernet as 128Gbps of theoretical data rate of PCI Express gives enough space to transfer 100Gbps of network traffic in the form of Ethernet frames.

The next generation of Netcope cards will use PCI Express Gen 4 x16 host interface that doubles the throughput and will allow to transfer 200Gbps of network traffic. In addition, PCI Express bus is full duplex, which allows the transfers with aforementioned throughput in both directions simultaneously
