The solution of the future is to run these functions in software: network functions virtualization.

Hardware leverages performance at the cost of flexibility. The change of any device requires a change of hardware as well. This represents a very costly operation, rendering hardware-centric solutions inflexible. Software leverages flexibility at the cost of performance. However, it is not a trivial task for an off-the-shelf CPU to process every piece of data at the speed of today’s networks. This makes software-centric solutions slow and inferior in terms of performance.
