Network Testing

Nobody can afford to run network infrastructure or distribute network-related products without proper testing. This creates a market for network testing appliances. Testing is most commonly done by creating an artificial environment in which network traffic generators are deployed in the infrastructure. Since network appliances will face various types of traffic, the testing appliance has to be able to simulate as many scenarios as possible, which is achievable only through programmability.

An ideal traffic generator has to fulfill the following criteria: It must be able generate traffic at up to 100 Gbps, because that is the bandwidth of today. It must be capable of generating all kinds of traffic: the shortest packets only, the longest packets only or mixed packet length. It must be fully programmable so that the network administrator or the network appliance vendor can run daily tests. Of no less importance, it must be able to record time the characteristics of the network and traffic, such as jitter, delay, and detection of bursts.
